20 songs to listen to that reflect the complexity of Stephen Sondheim’s work

(Ep. 29: “The Program,” “I’m Still Here,” “Friends and Lovers,” “Losing My Mind,” “I Believe In You”).

Later this month, we will introduce a new feature on the Times’ Culture blog called Your Turn. Each week, a member of our weekly podcast will share a favorite song on his or her favorite soundtrack.

This week, we’re excited to bring you 20 songs to listen to that reflect the complexity of Stephen Sondheim’s work — songs about love, loss, finding faith and the journey toward wholeness.

The following are all of Sondheim’s most accessible music. You might not believe how difficult it is to find a “Broadway musical” song for the Masses, but if you work your way through the pop canon and you “feel what I’m feeling,” you’ll find that a Sondheim song is on the list. And it is so much fun, no one else can dance to it.

The Grammy’s honored Sondheim with their Lifetime Achievement Award last year. The occasion brought some of his best work — such as “I’m Still Here” — to a broader audience.

We will also be updating the list with songs related to “Second Act”: songs “Second Act” is based on but inspired in a different way, and songs that are pure Sondheim from the first time I hear them. If you have a favorite Sondheim song, email it to us at [email protected]

We welcome feedback on which songs you find most valuable. If we should make any changes, we ask that you get in touch.
