UC regents delay final decision on UCLA’s Big Ten move until December

UCLA was ordered by the university’s Board of Trustees to complete a study on the Big Ten’s offer to move the Bruins to their preferred conference.

According to a copy of the report obtained by the Times, the board is now delaying final decision on the Big Ten’s move until December.

The report says it is in the “best interest” of the board to allow UCLA to complete internal deliberations on the matter before making a final decision.

The Big Ten is also requesting that UCLA’s athletic director, Dan Guerrero, make a recommendation on possible courses of action by Dec. 1.

The report said that UCLA has had “extensive deliberations and discussions” with its counterparts in the Big Ten.

“While it has often been the case that our institutions have approached the transition with the flexibility to undertake changes of conference affiliation that would be beneficial to them in the short term, we appreciate the Board’s commitment to provide necessary guidance, and recognize the urgency to resolve an issue that has been under discussion for some time,” UCLA athletics director Dan Guerrero wrote in an e-mail.

UCLA officials would not specify exactly when the Big Ten board might consider the issue but said it would take time. In their letter to the university, the Big Ten members made it clear that they are not asking for the immediate move.

“In the meantime, however, our institutions will continue to work with the Big Ten to develop a path forward that allows the athletic program to move forward without negatively impacting a financially sustainable athletics program for UCLA,” the letter said.

UCLA is scheduled to play in its current conference conference beginning in 2018. The Bruins are currently in the Pac-12, which has also been the conference with the UCLA Bruins playing in since 1968.
