Herschel Walker is the First African American to Win a National Contest

Letters to the Editor: The simple reason Republicans picked Herschel Walker — celebrity and all — can be traced back to the campaign’s roots. Walker won by running a slick, slick campaign. He was the most appealing politician in the race, and his appeal was not limited to the electorate. A study conducted at Harvard concluded that, “with regard to his public image, he became the first presidential candidate to capture the attention of more potential voters than any other candidate.”

That study also found that Walker became the first candidate to be elected president, elected governor, elected US senator, elected mayor of one of the largest cities in the nation and served a president and two presidents before winning a state election.

He was the first African American to win a national contest and is the first person to run for president and governor of one of the largest cities in the country and then win a state election.

Walker is a candidate, even if he’s losing to Hillary Clinton who’s a better candidate, and can win because of a campaign that put out the best campaign to date. Republicans are going to support the best candidate, which is likely to be Walker, and let Democrats run around, crying that they can’t win.

But this isn’t a matter of race, because both candidates are excellent candidates.
