How She Became The First Woman To Win The U.S. Open
At the age of seventeen Serena Williams was just an average tennis player. In fact, she was so bad, that the women’s pro tour was afraid she would quit playing. But in 2010 when she was 22-years-old, Serena discovered her calling.
For the first time in her life she was allowed to play on the professional tour and she was playing under Roger Federer. At first, she had to serve first against a man on the men’s pro tour, but after a few months she was winning over her first ten opponents.
After that she was playing more and more in her opponents’ matches and they were falling to her hands. In that time Serena Williams had not won a single match but now she was winning her matches week after week. After one year of losing to her then 19-year-old opponents, Serena was now winning over them week after week.
The women’s pro tour began to notice. She was now winning their matches. They decided to give her a break from her competition.
When she had finally returned back to being able to compete against men she was still winning matches. She was now able to get in the same group of players as men. But she was so good at this that she dominated the men.
She became the first woman to win the U.S. Open in 2011, beating the men’s champion, Andy Murray. And her victory over Murray made Serena the number one player in the world, at the time.
A lot of people criticized Serena Williams for being a professional athlete but she says this time it was different.
