Dobrzyzewski, who co-wrote the script with Bryan Cogman, said “I was really blown away the first time I read it. But you know as well as I do, when you’re telling a story in a book, when you’re telling a story, you try to make it as close to reality as possible.

“There’s many, many ways to do it. You’ve got to have it. You’ve got to make it personal. The best way to do it is by telling a story.”

“The Old Man” was Dobrzynski’s debut novel. It was written while he was studying at Northwestern University, where he is now a lecturer in English.

Dobrzynski said while the characters came from “real people”, their “souls and personality” were “imagined and invented”.

“Bryan and I are the best of friends. We talk everyday on the phone. So it wasn’t hard to work with him. But we had to have a conversation, he has to say something,” he said. “It was a hard conversation, but we decided, let’s give it a try.”
